Diseñando para el usuario 0™ [es]

Una de las cosas que hemos aprendido desarrollando Kakoe es que hemos ido demasiado lejos en cuanto a definición se refiere: hemos preparado una interfaz muy sólida (y un back aún más) capaz de soportar a cientos de usuarios usando Kakoe al mismo tiempo, como si llegaran en masa. La triste realidad nos ha demostrado lo contrario: escasa o nula actividad. Me ha recordado mucho a lo que pasó en Google Wave:

A día de hoy la actividad en Kakoe prácticamente es nula. Y cualquiera que llegue, debido a esa falta de actividad, no se molesta en seguir trasteando, ojea unos segundos la home y después se va. Defraudado.

Cuando defines wireframes para algo que tendrá cierta interacción social, suele ocurrir que tus propuestas son lanzadas considerando a un montón de usuarios, todos participando activamente, con sus perfiles completos, etc. La actividad que se refleja en tus propuestas es frenética. Pero no defines para el “usuario 0″, ese que llega de los primeros (seguramente colega), cuando apenas hay movimiento y sólo quiere “probar a ver qué tal”:

No rellena su about, ni siquiera una humilde foto;
Su actividad es mínima, saluda a un colega que se ha encontrado y poco más;
Apenas tiene contactos, y esa zona donde reflejabas un montón de avatares aparece tan vacía…
Como consecuencia de todo esto, el streaming de actividad queda seco, sin vida. El atractivo de este elemento se cae.

En esos momentos en los que la actividad es prácticamente nula, todas esas propuestas donde se mostraba la energía de tu idea con fabulosas interacciones ahora casi te perjudican.

Queremos darle ese último empujón a Kakoe. Pero a sabiendas de que quizás, por no haber definido para ese usuario 0, ya sea demasiado tarde…

Ética y Diseño [es]

De acuerdo, el diseño de interacción ayuda a establecer una relación más cordial entre tecnología y ser humano. ¿Pero qué ocurre cuando nos encontramos con el comercial que busca a los clientes con los que tú trabajarás? Veamos:

El objetivo del diseñador de interacción está claro: optimizar toda interfaz digital e irse a dormir con la sensación del trabajo bien hecho, donde nada falla y todo hila fino (trabajo que, dependiendo del cliente, muchas veces puede llegar a ser una meta imposible).

El objetivo del responsable comercial es otro bien distinto: no sólo se trata de traer nuevos clientes a la empresa donde trabajas, sino también de mantener los que ya existen, con nuevos projectos conforme van surgiendo nuevas necesidades.

Y aquí es donde dinero y ética chocan. ¿Cómo reaccionarías cuando si un comercial te pide que la solución a ese problema al que tratas de dar solución no debe ser perfecta? Existirán más posibilidades de seguir manteniendo ese cliente si esa interfaz que tú has desarrollado cojea por algún sitio. Lo que potencialmente se traduciría en más ganancias.

De momento no parece algo frecuente (aunque puedo prometer y prometo que en algún que otro proyecto ya lo haya escuchado). Pero posiblemente este duro período que estamos atravesando provoque este tipo de actitudes.

Helsingfors Series XVIII: Cuando la tecnología te hace (de verdad) la vida más fácil [es]

Esta tarde tengo un vuelo express a Madrid para solucionar algunos asuntos que tengo pendientes antes de que las Navidades se pongan de por medio… Por suerte, pude encontrar uno directo Helsinki-Madrid, que me pondrá – si la huelga de pilotos no lo impide – en suelo español en unas cuatro horas y media.

Sólamente Finnair ofrece esta conexión directa. Y sólo una empresa finlandesa podría ser de las pioneras en ofrecer un servicio como este: Recibir tu billete en un simple SMS.

Olvídate de ir con tu movil a las máquinas expendedoras para imprimir tu tarjeta de embarque, olvídate de pasar por el mostrador cuando la máquina no funcione… Are you from the past? Tu SMS es tu billete y es tan fácil como mostrar la pantalla de tu teléfono en la puerta de embarque, ya está:

Singapore Airlines y Lufthansa son que, yo conozca, otras de las aerolíneas pioneras en esta experiencia, que dicho sea de paso, me encanta. Si todo sigue así, muy pronto dejaré de perder mi tarjeta de embarque y sólo habrá que estar pendiente de tener tu móvil con la batería cargada.

Aparte del servicio, que marca una gran diferencia, el texto del SMS se sale, claro, conciso, directamente al grano:

Ya tenemos Voota online [es]

Después de 3 meses trabajando hoy, 18 de noviembre, la primera versión de Voota ve la luz.

Como ya comenté en un post anterior el objetivo de Voota es “permitir a la gente de a pie votar y opinar sobre los políticos actuales, ayudando de esta forma a tener una idea más decente de quién es quién en el mundo de la política de nuestro país”.

Hemos intentado salir lo antes posible por lo que es muy posible que encuentres cosas que no funcionen al 100%. Tampoco tenemos mucho contenido (en realidad el contenido lo aportas tú participando). Tenemos un montón de ideas en la cabeza que queremos que vean la luz cuanto antes, pero también queremos conocer las primeras reacciones de la gente que use Voota por eso hemos salido en cuanto hemos tenido lo más básico.

Cualquier sugerencia o crítica será siempre bienvenida: simplemente deja un comentario en este post y nos encargaremos de él.

Second interview will let us know a bit more the work of Nuno Correia. Nuno is a researcher and teaches at the University of Art and Design Helsinki.

Please, give us a short description about yourself.

Nuno Correia (N.C.)
I’m an artist, designer and teacher in the field of new media. I’m from Portugal, but I’ve been living in Helsinki for more than 3 years. I moved there because of my ongoing doctoral studies in new media art at Media Lab Helsinki. My background is quite diversified, and involves international business, innovation management, jazz, theatre, and comics. I started programing BASIC as a kid on a ZX Spectrum.

When did you start working as an IxD?

N.C.
I started teaching interaction design at university level and doing freelance webdesign work in 2000, in Lisbon.

J.L.
We know what are the good things about this job but, what´s the worst thing about what you do?

N.C.
Sometimes the tight deadlines don’t allow for the kind of depth and exploration that you would like. The quality and innovation level of the projects suffer with that.

J.L.
Regarding your profession, what are the main differences about what you do here in Finland and the rest of Europe?

N.C.
I’ve worked mostly in Portugal and Finland. The main difference is that the whole society is very much technology driven. So you feel that you’re at the heart of things, that what you’re doing is important for the competitiveness of the country as a whole. In Portugal you get the feeling you’re swimming against the tide, that maybe you should have chosen to be a football player instead. However things are changing, and more emphasis is being given to science and technology.

J.L.
How do you see the future of this profession?

S.P.
I’m an optimist, so I see a bright future where there is a better integration and understanding between the interaction designer and the disciplines that surround her/him – such as visual design and programming.

Helsingfors Series VII: 5 questions to an IxDer

I am a bit curious about how´s the IxD scene in this area.
That´s why I´ve decided to ask 5 short questions to relevant IxDers who work on Nordic countries.

The first one is Sergio Palomo, Spaniard with a strong background on Mobile IxD living in Helsinki.

Please, give us a short description about yourself.

Sergio Palomo (S.P.)
I’m from Valencia where I studied Computer Engineering, and after my
studies there I came to Finland to study Software Engineering. During
those studies I was introduced to the field of Human Computer
Interaction which resulted a fascinating area and which defined my
professional career.

J.L.
When did you start working as an IxD?

S.P.
I had previous experience in web and multimedia design and
development, but working as an IxD as such was in 2000 in Barcelona. I
stayed there for two years when I decided to come back to Finland.
Since then I’ve been working mostly with mobile devices and in the
last year a bit more with multiplatform digital services.

J.L.
We know what are the good things about this job but, what´s the worst thing about what you do?

S.P.
Hmmm, good question. In general I just love it, but sometimes
designers are in the middle of internal discussions which have to do
more with politics than design. It is frustrating to deliver a design
solution which goes straight to the trash bin not because the lack of
quality but because some other issues.

J.L.
Regarding your profession, what are the main differences about what you do here in Finland and the rest of Europe?

S.P.
My experience outside Finland is limited to Spain, Germany and UK. In
terms of tools and processes the differences have been minimum. The
differences were maybe in the way those processes were conducted due
to cultural differences. On one hand Finns are very pragmatic, and on
the other they establish a clear line between professional and
personal life. Both aspects result in love for well tought and
reasonable plans and efficiency. Every extra minute you have to do at
work is lived as a small failure. Of course this is not limited only
to IxD but applies to whole society. For a stranger, this may look
initially like a lack of commitment and coldness. In other countries,
having long working days and endless discussions did not seem like an
issue.
Another difference is the amount of time and effort spent in educating
clients and stakeholders and justifying tasks. This is not always blue
sky, but normally almost everyone in the project is aware of the
tasks, duties and value brought by an IxD, so she can focus on the
design work.

J.L.
How do you see the future of this profession?

S.P.
To be honest, I do not have a clue. Lately I kind of share Moggridge’s
view. Some of the brightest IxDers I’ve been working with were Visual
and Industrial designers who integrated the IxD knowledge and skills
into their background. I think IxD is here to stay, but in the long
term not as a separate discipline but as part of an integration of
disciplines called digital design or similar. But, what do I know?. I
am just a design worker! ;)

In a country where everything is covered by danger and warnings I think this second approach is a smooth way of warning travellers. I simply love the buttons “Tell someone” / “Take action” in the “Be alert” mode.

Voota: Tú tienes la última palabra [es]

La primera vez que nos juntamos para hablar sobre Voota fue antes del verano. Se trataba de una idea en pañales pero con fundamento: permitir a la gente de a pie votar y opinar sobre los políticos actuales, ayudando de esta forma a tener una idea más decente de quién es quién en el mundo de la política de nuestro país. Lo que más me gustó del concepto es el poder acercar la política a aquellos que piensan que la política no es para ellos.

Y si la idea era buena, el equipo lo era aún más: François Derbaix (a la batuta), Leo del Valle (al teclado), María Ayuso (percusión), Sergio Viteri (bajos) y yo mismo (a las partituras).

Enseguida nos pusimos a darle los primeros martillazos a Voota y en muy poco tiempo hemos avanzado un montón. Me hace mucha ilusión formar parte del equipo fundador, aunque como bien dice François en su post “la asociación (Voota) está abierta a todo aquel que quiera contribuir”.

Los ya clásicos canales de comunicación cuando se monta un tinglado de este tipo ya están engrasados y con velocidad de crucero: Facebook y Twitter. Si te interesa subirte a nuestro autobús, o simplemente quieres decir “aquí estoy yo” pincha, pincha, que nos alegrará escucharte.

Futuristic interfaces

Las week the guys at Vostok posted an interesting article about Sci-fi interfaces in movies.

Well, in that very moment I didn´t remember the name of the brilliant author of several videos I saw in the past about this kind of futuristic interfaces.

A few days later my mind brought me the name of the guy: Mark Coleran. Mark is a Visual Designer who´s been working for films such us Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, James Bond´s film The World Is Not Enough or The Bourne Identity (check out his complete porfolio).

Holographic Interface – round interface

This is the final project of Ivan Tihienko, a student from Jerusalem, presented last year at the Bezalel academy of Arts and Design.
In a short video Tihienko explains the amount of possibilities of the holographic shadow. The technology behind this wonderful idea can applied nowadays.
